Indoor Space Improvement Grant form

The City of Yellowknife is committed to supporting small and medium-sized businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. From October 18, 2021, eligible businesses are invited to apply to the Indoor Space Improvement Grant. If approved, businesses must submit their improvement receipts and will receive up to $5,000.

This program will consider any eligible costs/expenses incurred after May 10, 2021.

Please carefully read the following information before applying.

Eligible Costs and expenses

Grants of up to $5,000 will be given to small and medium-sized businesses to recover COVID-19 related expenses incurred anytime after May 10, 2021 to improve their indoor space.

The grant, if awarded, will provide reimbursement of eligible costs/expenses upon receipt of proof of expenditure.  Funds payable under the grant will be paid within 30 business days.

Eligible expenses include any reasonable and necessary costs for businesses to remain engaged with current and future customers throughout the pandemic -  during recovery and re-opening - or any other improvements approved by the Director of Economic Development and Strategy. These include, but are not limited to, adaptations made for health and safety protocols, including:

Physical distancing improvements

  • Purchase of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
  • Installation of protective screens/barriers/social distancing signage/sanitizing stations;
  • Purchase of interior cleaning products (including sanitizer products/disinfectant chemicals/ wipes/chemical sprayers/scrubs etc.);
  • Purchase of equipment and/or furniture for COVID health and safety (tables/chairs/sofas/stools etc.);
  • Renovation of physical space to adhere to OCPHO guidelines;
  • Installation, repair or maintenance of ventilation system to improve air quality; and,
  • Installation, alterations of window(s) and door(s) or removal of walls to facilitate pick-up/delivery/drive-thru services, etc.

Online adaptation improvements

  • Online ordering services/ website upgrades/specific advertising and associated delivery of the product (may include costs related to putting a delivery service in place/shipping/delivery app account fees/remote payment systems/technology within vehicles); and,
  • Screening machines.

Any ideas that help your business to adapt and recover during COVID-19 will be reviewed.

Ineligible Costs and Expenses

Any costs external to COVID-19 business recovery and operation are ineligible and will not be considered. This includes:

  • Rent
  • Taxes
  • Employee wages
  • Consulting fees
  • Business plans/strategic plans/feasibility studies/strategies, etc.
  • Inventory costs
  • Existing operating costs
  • Office furniture
  • Laptops, headphones, printers, cables, etc.
  • Renovations not required for social distancing
  • Items purchased for resale
  • Recurring subscription fees/services implemented pre-COVID-19
  • Capital expenses and leasehold improvements

Businesses eligibility requirements

Before applying, businesses must meet all following criteria below:

  1. Business must have twenty (20) employees or less.
  2. Business must be within the City of Yellowknife, have a valid business licence, and operate in accordance with applicable bylaws and permits.
  3. Qualifying industries:
    • Food and retail services;
    • Hospitality and Tourism;
    • Arts, Culture and Entertainment;
    • Personal care services (including registered medical practitioners); and,
    • Recreation.
  4. Business must have been open/operating since March 1, 2020.
  5. Businesses must be open/operating as of October 1, 2021.
  6. Businesses are eligible for only one (1) application for this grant program up to a maximum of $5,000.
  7. Businesses must be in good financial standing with the City of Yellowknife related to municipal taxes, fees and charges.
  8. Business owners must comply with all government and Public Health recommendations related to COVID-19 and have worked with Public Health to ensure that their business operations comply with COVID-19 protocols.
